Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry

Advancing the science of drug formulation, delivery, and dosage design to develop safe,
effective, and patient-focused medicines.

About the Department of Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry

The Department of Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry focuses on the scientific study, identification, evaluation, standardization, and development of natural products with therapeutic potential. As one of the foundational disciplines of pharmaceutical sciences, Pharmacognosy bridges traditional knowledge with modern pharmaceutical research to explore medicinal plants and other natural sources for new drugs, herbal medicines, nutraceuticals, and cosmeceuticals.

Established in 1990, the department is committed to developing scientifically and technically competent professionals and interdisciplinary researchers through quality education and innovative research. The department provides academic and research opportunities for undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. students, supported by experienced faculty and well-equipped laboratories.

The department integrates modern analytical, phytochemical, pharmacological, and biotechnological approaches for the authentication and quality control of crude drugs, herbal formulations, extracts, fractions, and isolated phytoconstituents. Its research activities address the growing need for scientifically validated and standardized natural products across the pharmaceutical, healthcare, nutraceutical, and cosmetic sectors.

QR-Code Enabled Medicinal Plant Garden – “SANJEEVINI”

A unique QR-code enabled Medicinal Plant Garden, “SANJEEVINI,” has been developed and maintained by the Department of Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry. The garden covers approximately 483.33 sq. m. and houses more than 120 medicinal plant species.

The collection includes medicinally important plants such as Ashoka, Bael, Banyan, Black Pepper, Brahmi, Chitraki, Drumstick, Giloy, Ginger, Indian Senna, Jamun, Kokum, Kurchi, Neem, Periwinkle, Piper longum, Shatavari, Turmeric, and Ajwain, among others.

Each plant is assigned a unique identification code and supported by a dedicated QR code. Visitors and students can scan the code using a smartphone to access information including:

  • Botanical and common names
  • Synonyms
  • Plant family
  • Chemical constituents
  • Medicinal uses

The SANJEEVINI garden serves as an interactive learning resource, connecting traditional knowledge of medicinal plants with digital technology and modern pharmaceutical education.

Faculty & Research Recognition

The department’s faculty members have received several awards and recognitions for excellence in teaching and research. These include national-level teaching and research awards, publication awards, best paper awards, and professional recognitions from organizations in the pharmaceutical and pharmacognosy fields.

Faculty members have also contributed to the academic and professional community by serving on governing bodies, scientific committees, and conference committees at reputed institutions and by chairing national and international conferences.
